Competency Based Instrument Rating

Description

REQUIREMENTS:

  • PPL(A) or CPL(A) + BIR licence
  • Proven flight record of 50 hours as Pilot in Command under IFR
  • Class 2 medical certificate – no contraindications to IFR flying
  • English at ICAO Level 4

CBIR training is an alternative pathway to Instrument Rating for General Aviation pilots performing flight operations on light single-engine aircraft. It is perfect for owner pilots holding a PPL(A) or CPL(A) who use their own or leased aircraft as a convenient means of personal and business travel.

One of the main advantages of CBIR training is the ability to take credit for previous pilot experience – such as that gained from a BIR rating – and to base an individualised syllabus on it, tailored to the student’s specific needs. For this reason, the entire course can take much less time than a traditional IR training course while maintaining high quality.

Pilots trained according to the CB format benefit from a smaller syllabus and do not have to acquire knowledge that is only useful on more advanced aircraft.

As an authorised Cirrus Aircraft centre, we make sure that the student acquires the practical knowledge necessary to fly under IFR proficiently and safely. We place great emphasis on a proper understanding of the very aircraft on which the training is delivered – the Cirrus SR Series. However, the training is also an excellent platform for pilots of other aircraft equipped with Garmin avionics.

An important distinction that results from the use of Cirrus aircraft and has a direct bearing on the quality of the training is the fact that we carry out the practical part by flying the routes. With us during the training you will visit a large part of Poland, and also realise a flight outside the country.

Theoretical training

Having a base in the form of a BIR, the theoretical part is not realised as a separate module. It accompanies the practical classes and does not require a final exam. During the full training, the student is required to spend 80 hours on theoretical classes. However, only 8 must be completed at the centre with the assistance of an instructor. The training syllabus consists of 7 subjects:

  • Air Law
  • Flight Planning
  • Human Performance
  • IFR Communications
  • Instrumentation
  • Meteorology
  • Radio Navigation

However, it is not possible to carry out CBIR training without a proven track record of flying in limited visibility. The base is only a reference point for the construction of the syllabus by the head of training in charge of the centre.

Practical Training

The basis of the CBIR training carried out on the foundation of the Basic Instrument Rating entails 10 hours of practical training in a Cirrus SR aircraft. During the course, the pilot learns and trains the skills that will enable him or her to perform IFR flights in the minima characteristic of the traditional path.

The training course is preceded by an assessment of the pilot’s competence carried out by the head of training of the Aero Poznan centre. It takes place on the basis of verification of documents confirming the experience gained and during an interview. The resulting training syllabus will serve as a basis for the implementation of the course, which will allow to complete the knowledge and adequately prepare for the practical test.

As much as 40 hours of practical training is required for the full basis for CBIR training.
